Gun violence is pervasive throughout the United States. Faced with the reality of daily tragedy and the need for meaningful action, Left Field Labs worked to create a platform to fight back on a large scale.

A duty to act

In the United States, the prevalence of mass shootings has become a tragic staple of the culture. In 2019 alone, there were 417 mass shootings—the most ever in one year. Such rampant gun violence demands action, and such action will only take place when enough voices join the conversation.
Every citizen of this country has the ability and duty to join this conversation, by making their voice heard and calling for stricter gun legislation. At Left Field Labs, we felt specially equipped to provoke positive involvement through mass-scale communication; and set out to amplify the voices of those calling for change.

Arming twitter to fight
Gun violence fatalities in the United States are 20x higher than in other countries, however our gun laws remain among the world’s least restrictive. We wanted to generate mass awareness of this alarming statistic to catalyze action for change. Our answer to this is #ShootATweet.
Its use is simple and effective. A user visits shootatweet.com, where they’re shown the sobering facts on nationwide gun deaths, school shootings, and murder rates as compared to other nations. These
statistics are provided by Everytown.org and presented with clean, direct illustrations, without unnecessary embellishment.
Users are invited to link their twitter account and set their location to participate in #ShootATweet. After they’ve linked their account, whenever there is an act of gun violence in their state, an automated tweet is broadcast from their account urging their local congresspeople and senators to take action in favor of gun legislation.

A mission of change
Our mission with #ShootATweet is to fuel a new communication standard in modern democracy with the use of simple, effective technology. And to empower those who speak out against unacceptable violence to raise their voices again and again, as many times as is needed, until change comes.
